Long post, I’m sorry!
Today was your first doctors appointment! We realized it takes longer to get ready and leave the house when you have a tiny human to get ready too, especially when we would just prefer to cuddle with you than go anywhere. We got a lot of great advice from Crystal, your new PA. She reassured us that everything we could possibly worry about was normal but did order a bilirubin test because you were looking a bit jaundiced and my full milk hasn’t come in to help you pass all the bilirubin you were born with. That took us to our next stop, the hospital where you were born just a few days ago! Your head kept falling forward in your seat so I learned how to use your stroller/car seat/base combo by reading all of the instruction manuals while waiting for them to call you in for your test. You had to get pricked in the foot TWICE so they could get enough blood to test and I cried more than you. In my defense, I still have a lot of hormones swirling around but I think I scared the phlebotomist (who happened to share your birthday).
We decided to get some lunch and a few things from Walgreens. Your dad got you a Rafael ninja turtle plushie because your personality is just like Raf. Your auntie Linda gave us so much advice and is going to come visit you soon.
When we got home I fed you, strapped you up in a baby sling and got straight to work doing administrative things like adding you to our insurance, coordinating with the doctors office and the people bringing your jaundice treatment supplies, learning everything there is to know about baby jaundice, making sure my maternity leave was all set, and talking to your Grandma and Opa about visiting tomorrow.
After that, we took a little nap and got ready for Henry from Cook Children’s Homecare to come bring a Bili Blanket to help get rid of that bilirubin in your blood. He taught us everything we needed to know and we got you hooked up to the machine by putting a little blue glowing light pad on your back under your shirt. Your dog, Roca, was very concerned and stayed by your side the entire time.
You slept for a while after that and I got concerned because you didn’t even wake up to eat like you usually do. I had to sit you up to wake you up just to get you to eat a little. Thankfully you woke up more, ate, pooped and went back to sleep on your little biliblanket. And to end the day, my milk came in just as it should.
I think we’re going to be ok, little one. Mom loves you!
Sam
